WOVEN: MICROFIBER SERIES

Building a Roadmap to Reduce Microfiber Pollution

Microfiber pollution is an urgent and widespread issue facing both environmental and human health. Yet, gaps in science and research, and hurdles to implement known solutions still exist. The WOVEN Symposium Series brings together the best minds across industries – from science to supply chain, materials design to filtration technology, research to reuse – to develop a collective vision for reducing microfiber pollution from textiles.

The current state of scattershot solutions can’t keep pace with the growing problem – but together, we can unlock, and expedite, a collective vision – a Roadmap to Reduce Microfiber Pollution.

The WOVEN Symposium Series

June 2024: WOVEN North America

The 5 Gyres Institute and HATCH hosted a transformational two days of learning, leadership, and cross-sector networking in Los Angeles, California. Together, we laid the groundwork for collective action – that companies, communities, policymakers, and citizens can look to for microfiber pollution solutions up- and downstream.

January 2024: WOVEN United Kingdom I

The inaugural event in Manchester uncovered innovative new research on textile construction and shedding rates, new technologies for filtration, and research on microfiber effects. Participants identified actionable steps that will lay the foundation for upcoming events.

September 2024: WOVEN United Kingdom II

The final event addressed several roadblocks identified during the Los Angeles convening, including the financial and logistical barriers that the textile industry faces. Future gatherings enable us to pool resources, share developments in science, and learn about advancements in textile manufacturing.
